It's that time of year that usually brings colds and the flu, the last thing you want to do when feeling miserable is make yourself feel worse. Unfortunately most of the time the over the counter options are filled with added sugars, dyes and medicine that is only masking the problem, not really doing anything to help it. What if I told you that it is beneficial for the body to fight off infection and during this time managing the symptoms instead of masking them will give your body and immune support needed to feel better sooner. Upon the first sign of anything brewing start to get as much rest as your can. I know it is easier said than done but also stay hydrated, keep surfaces, sheets and blankets clean, let fresh air in the house and start supporting your immune system.

Chest and Head Congestion

One of the easiest things I love to do for the kids and myself is place them in the bathroom with the door shut and the shower running on super hot, add 6 drops of organic peppermint essential oil, 6 drops of organic eucalyptus oil and 5 drops of organic lavender essential oil to the ledge of the shower and inhale deeply for 5-10 minutes. These oils will encourage the sinuses to open and you should start to feel fluid begin to drain. If you have a essential oil sinus roller, rubbing the relief oil over your forehead, down your nose, under cheek bones, and down your neck over your throat and lymph nodes brings relief within 15 mins. This approach will work with a diffuser instead of the shower also. Sleeping with a diffuser running while misting eucalyptus, peppermint and lavender encourages a more restful sleep. When it comes to sleeping try to keep your head and shoulders more propped up allowing the fluid in the sinus to drain down instead of waking up to a face puffy and full of pressure.

Another option is using a chest balm, Badger Balm is the safe option. Crafted from organic and natural oils, essential oil blend and beeswax. Always free of petroleum, fragrances, dyes, parabens, synthetic, Gmo, artificial or harsh ingredients. Inhale a scent of eucalyptus and mint giving you relief from chest and nasals congestion! Safe for the whole family.

Essential Oil Sinus Roller Blend

  • Roller Vial Container
  • 1/2 oz (1 Tablespoon) Carrier Oil
  • 6 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil (avoid use on kids 6 and under, replace with rosemary)
  • 6 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

Cough & Sore Throat

At the first sign of a sore throat start increasing your immune support, keep added sugars and processed foods out. Adding garlic, elderberry and increase vitamin C supports a healthy immune system. If you can stomach it mince a glove of fresh garlic or 1/2 teaspoon of minced garlic in the jar, add garlic to 2 oz drink of choice, juice from a fresh squeezed lemon and 1/2 teaspoon of fresh grated ginger, 1/8-1/4 teaspoon of powdered ginger. Stir until blended and chug down. Give yourself 30 mins to relax as garlic can cause nausea but the ginger is added to help combat that. It passes in about 30 mins but remember your going to a little garlicky smelling! I refer to this drink as a garlic shot! According to PubMed Central taking garlic for the common cold shortened the cold to only 1.5 days whereas taking taking the placebo lasting 5 days.

A soothing drink supports relief to your throat mix your favorite organic tea, fresh squeezed lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of Raw Honey and mint if you have any. Sipping the tea and holding it to your face will also support clean sinus! Another option for a sore throat is to gargle twice a day with warm filtered water and sea salt. This not only supports killing bacteria, it also works to help with the pain.

Ear Aches and/or Infections

My daughter suffered from so many ear infections that we finally ended up getting tubes put in her ears. Since tubes she hasn't had one infection so I will never change my decision about that. I always recommend talking to your doctor about tubes if your child is suffering month after month with at least 4 infections in 6 months. Repeated infections over and over can cause damage to the ear drum resulting in hearing loss. For the occasionally ear infection or ache garlic is my number one go to! Garlic not only reliefs the pain but fight the infection. A few ways I go about this is to place a peeled garlic clove in the ear like a cotton ball, allow it to rest there or sleep with it in. Piece the one side that is pressing onto the ear allow the garlic juice to drip into the ear. Lay with the garlic ear facing the ceiling. Another option is if you have a jar of minced garlic, soak up the juice onto a cotton round and place in ear and squeeze the cotton round to allow the juice to go into your ear. Lay with your garlic ear facing the ceiling. I also like to rub extra virgin oil mixed with tea tree and eucalyptus essential oil behind my ear and in front rubbing in a downward pull.

So many of us were taught that a fever is a dangerous thing to be treated with over-the-counter drugs; when in fact a fever is one of your body’s best defenses against viruses. There is zero evidence that the presence of a fever worsens the an illness or causes long-term neurological damage. Thus, if you lower a healthy fever you can actually hinder your body’s ability to fight off infection.

What is a healthy fever? Firstly, a fever is defined as a temperature over 100.4, so anything less than that is no cause for concern. Second, most doctors will tell you not to let a child’s fever go higher than 104 degrees and 103 for adults. Please be advised under the care of a trusting doctor!

The best medicine is to stay hydrated, rest, and support your immune system. Working on reducing the fever with lukewarm baths, eating small bites of food and iodine baths. Read everything you need to know about iodine baths here .

Runny Nose

Beside being so irritating, they can cause an irritated nose from nonstop rubbing. One of the easiest things I love to do for the kids and myself is place them in the bathroom with the door shut and the shower running on super hot, add 8 drops of organic peppermint essential oil and 5 drops of organic lavender essential oil to the ledge of the shower and inhale deeply for 5-10 minutes. Blow your nose after and during to get all it out. A way to combat the nose irritation plus save money from buying Kleenex is using washable hankies. Use old shirts and cut into squares, place them in a jar marked hankies with a jar next to it for the used hankies. Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the bottom of the jar to give them a mint scent.
