What are Essential Oils (EO)?
Essential Oils are concentrated plant and tree extracts created from steam distillation, CO2 extraction and cold pressing.
- Steam Distillation – employs water &/or steam to separate the oil from the plant or tree matter.
- Cedarwood, Chamomile, Sage, Eucalyptus & Lavender to name a few
- CO2 Extraction – uses carbon dioxide to septate the oil from the plant or tree matter. No heating involved means the oils remain pure and unaltered.
- Florals like rose and spices like ginger are created using this technique
- Cold Pressing – this is a technique used only for citrus oils. With the concentrate inside the rind, they heat them to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and then press the fruits while in the cooling process. This ensures the citrus oils retain the fresh uplifting scent.
There are more than 300 hundred different essential oils from plants and trees.
Alternative to OTC drugs plus a range of aliments naturally.
Fragrance oils are not Essential oils.
Why USDA Organic Matters?
There is no regulation on essential oils meaning companies can use fillers, additives and extracts(oil mixed with grain alcohol) and sell it to you as essential oil.
With the oils created from plants and trees that grow in the ground, absorbing ALL the toxins, heavy metals, and pesticides. An USDA Organic certification ensures that the ground is tested and safe from any toxins, metals and pesticides. The oil will have come from a 100% complete organic start to finish.
Since these are used for naturally healing, using pure organic oils is important to ensure you achieve the best support.
How to buy safe!
Check labels for both common name and Latin name.
EO should be pure containing nothing else.
Blends should contain only a carrier oil and EO.
While shopping online look for a country of origin, a brief description, instructions/cautions and storage information.
Aromatherapy grade and therapeutic grade are marking claims.
Stay away from the sales pitches.
Try to only buy USDA Organic.
How to Use:
- Diffusing – this can be done by adding 5-8 drops of your favorite oils to water inside your diffuser, diffuser bracelet or necklace.
- Inhalation – this can be done by placing 2 drops of oil on the palm of your hands, rub together and cup over you nose and inhale.
- Steam – this can be done by adding 5-8 drops of oils to the back of shower giving you a great way to clear sinuses and bring relaxation to your night.
- Topically – this can be done with many things to a chest rub, first aid ointment, skin and body care to replacing most things in your medicine cabinet. Always dilute, dilute, dilute. Essential Oils are 100% concentrated meaning they could burn or damage the skin. For EO rollers use a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil, sunflower oil, grapeseed oil.
- Apply on an injury, on the bottom of the feet- especially with kids, on pressure points - on the wrists, behind the ears.
Always patch test a small amount on the inside of your forearm for at least 24 hours
Not all oils are safe for everyone. Always check before using oils on kids under 2, kids 6 and under as well as some health conditions, seniors, pets and pregnancy.

Are EO Safe to Ingest?
Essential Oils are a strong type of medicine and ingesting them may be a recipe for disaster. Since they are very strong, taking too much too quickly can happen without you even realizing it. The oils then become toxic and dangerous to you and your health.
FDA does not regulate any EO so if your do see something that say FDA approved or FDA guidelines for ingesting EO take that for what it is.
Diluting is extremely important regardless is using EO properly. With that please keep in mind that oil and water do not mix, meaning it will not dilute the EO leaving you with a strong oil that you are trying to ingest.
A few things to look out for when ingesting EO is to be aware of EO toxicity, this is a real thing and can have serious consequences such as burning the esophagus or anything inside that the oil comes in contact with, irritation and even nerve pain.
If you are going to ingest EO it is advised that you are under the care of a herbalist and doctor. It is also important that you dilute the oil properly, to do that apply 1-2 drops of oil and mix with honey, MCT oil, CBD oil, carrier oil or vegetable glycerin.
Are EO Safe to Use Daily?
The easy answer is yes but do keep in mind you can over do them! Like anything else you can use and apply too much to the oil. This can cause skin irritation if using on skin in an excessive amount as well as causing coughing, wheezing and headache when diffusing to much!
What are Photosensitizing Oils?
Essential Oils are oils that increase your absorption of UVA & UVS rays, making it much easier to burn. All citrus oils are photosensitizing oils!
My Favorite Brand!
My favorite brand is Mountain Rose Herbs, not only are most of their oils certified organic, but they are also priced to fit any budget. Another thing I like about them is they have extremely strict standards and will not put any product on the shelves. If a product had a bad crop year or bad weather year the company will leave the item out of stock until they can get the same crop in stock.
